Host-Microorganism Interactions
The relative fitness of interacting organisms can be very complex to predict but it is crucial for our understating of the evolutionary process. The laboratory of Luís Teixeira tackles this problem by using Drosophila melanogaster as model system to study host-symbiont interactions. Recently, it started to uncover the genetic factors that control the density of the most common insect endosymbiont, Wolbachia pipientis.

Host Pathogen Interactions
The most prevalent type of ecological interaction occurs between hosts and their microbiota. To understand how organisms sense and react to their microbiota is crucial for the advancement of different fields, from evolutionary biology to medicine. The laboratory of Julien Royet studies these interactions, using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. Recently, these studies led to the discovery of a small number of neurons that modulate female oviposition upon sensing of peptidoglycans.

A meeting of the Royal Entomological Society Special Interest Groups
The intimate relationship between endosymbionts and their hosts is often modulated by the immune system. This fact is the motivational force to organise a joint meeting from two Royal Entomological Society special interest groups: Endosymbionts and Infection & Immunity. The aim is to promote the exchange of ideas and collaborations by bringing together participants from a range of backgrounds, including evolutionary ecology, physiology, vector biology and functional genetics.
